There is this 'threshold' in a man's / boy's life when he ... I wouldn't say 'understands', because we never really do, but perhaps intuits what is a woman and the depth of her allure. It does not need to be put into words ... you just know ... the beauty, the power and hopefully some older man is around to warn you not to act as a bloody fool!
'Coming of age' stories are interesting for what they tell us about the human condition, but much less investigated are the 'meh! ... couldn't be bothered-stories'. That's an insight that I've found no ready-made place for in our common cultural 'calendar': When I was a young man I wanted to fu*k all the attractive women and life was simple. Sometimes I did and most of the time I did not. Now that I've reached an age when sex is not the most pressing issue in life, I find myself evaluating women according to quite different criteria. And finding myself disappointed by their shallowness and general wheedling attempts at petty manipulation. Not a welcome insight by either party!
Of course ... all the usual statistical disclaimers and caveats ... but when beauty is your chief stock-in-trade, your market value will inevitably diminish with age. I'm ugly as sin and only get better at what they pay me for.
You should see some of the women in this posh part of town where I live ... the ludicrous amount of 'work' they have had done to themselves ... it's ... an absurd facsimile of a perverted sense of beauty turned out shockingly ugly -- with everyone pretending otherwise!
Well, that was the story of how I nearly "came of age". Only it was the promise of future delights in the band rehearsal room at a local factory that was the location of my tryst. She took one look at the dingy lights and she decided that she could do better. And she did with a 6th former in the back of his dad's car if rumour was to be believed.
It took me several weeks to find out during which i thought "get lost, loser" was just her way of playing hard to get. I still see her in the distance as she lives near me but the night that I was spurned is only celebrated by the occasional wave of recognition from us both.
